Staff Veterinarian Maryland Zoo is an EEO employer - M/F/Vets/Disabled General Summary: The Staff Veterinarian is responsible for all aspects of daily clinical, medical, and surgical care of the Zoo’s collection. This position manages incoming shipments and quarantine oversight. The Veterinarian oversees the public health program and infectious disease management, reproductive medical management, and student programs, including the Cranfield Summer Research Intern. The role involves ongoing research and fieldwork and reports to the Senior Director of Animal Health, Conservation and Research. The position supports the Zoo in achieving its conservation, sustainability, education, and DEAI goals. Essential Functions: Primary Functions: Ensure comprehensive day-to-day medical and surgical care of the collection. Provide medical care for hospitalized and quarantined patients, including collection and non-collection animals. Manage the veterinary externship and Summer Research Internship programs. Coordinate veterinary aspects of incoming animal shipments with Taxon Curators. Develop and update the Zoo’s medical and quarantine protocols in collaboration with hospital managers. Oversee the Employee Health Program and serve as veterinary liaison on health, zoonoses, and public health issues. Plan and respond to infectious disease outbreaks. Collaborate with outside veterinary institutions. Ensure compliance with USDA, AZA, state veterinary, and federal DEA regulations. Participate in the Animal Recapture Team. Engage in conservation and research projects. Provide medical and surgical care to wildlife presented at the Zoo. Support the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places, contributing to sustainability goals. Promote the Maryland Zoo’s mission. Perform additional duties as assigned and adhere to all Zoo policies. Communication (Internal and External): Record medical data in the ZIMS system. Deliver lectures on research and zoo medicine topics. Publish research and clinical case articles. Participate in national organizations like AZA, AAZV, AAV, ARAV, WDA, AAWV, and AVMA. Attend continuing education for licensure. Communicate with government agencies such as Maryland DNR and USFWS. Attend zoo management and staff meetings. Resource Management: Manage the Veterinary Externship and Summer Research Internship programs. Update medical and quarantine policies to meet AZA, AAZV standards, and Zoo needs. Minimum Qualifications: Education: DVM, VMD, or equivalent. Experience/Training: Internship or residency in zoo medicine preferred. ACZM board certification or equivalent strongly preferred. At least one year of zoological medicine experience required. Valid Maryland veterinary license, DEA license, Maryland controlled substances license, and USDA Veterinary Accreditation. Valid driver’s license. Traits Desirable: Ability to work with diverse individuals. Highly organized. Strong communication, mentoring, time management, and interpersonal skills. Data analysis skills. Sound decision-making regarding animal medical care. Self-directed, collaborative, and detail-oriented. Equipment: Operate various machines and equipment including computers, radios, vehicles, animal restraint and capture devices, darting equipment, incubators, and scales. Working Conditions: 24-hour on-call availability. Physical ability to exert force and remain on feet for extended periods. Ability to travel across the Zoo and work outdoors year-round.
